The Oscars happened…recently? I used to be able to keep up with these things, but now, you know—with no family and no job, I just don’t have the time! Also the percentage of movies I watch these days has dropped somewhat.
Anyway, what I’m saying is, I didn’t watch any of the movies nominated but I’m going to go category by category and let you know who/what I think should have won based on title alone. I’m not doing the categories involving individual people because everyone Black who didn’t win, should’ve and everyone Black who did win, rightfully so.
Best Picture
The Zone of Interest should have won, sounds like a Star Trek episode.
Best Animated Short
Letter to a Pig in a landslide; what a snub!
Best Animated Feature
The winner was The Boy and the Heron and I was going to say it went to the right film, but then I saw this category has a picture called Robot Dreams. Another screw-up by the boneheads at the Academy!
Best Original Screenplay
If May December is also the name of the protagonist, definitely should have won. Easily.
Best Adapted Screenplay
American Fiction won and rightly so. Happy Black History LIFE.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Society of the Snow. Dope name. Get your head in the game, Academy.
Best Production Design
Poor Things.
Best Costume Design
Poor Things. So nice it won twice. Probably because it was nominated with the same yawner title having movies in both categories.
Best International Feature
Reasonably so, The Zone of Interest won. I imagine because it sounds like it could be both a TOS episode *and* a TNG episode.
Best Visual Effects
The Creator. Truly cannot believe this didn’t win. I thought it was a NIGHT THAT CELEBRATES CREATORS.
Best Editing
Should have been Anatomy of a Fall, which I assume is about the history of Slapstick.
Best Documentary Short
Documentaries are boring, so their titles are inherently boring, so The Last Repair Shop won and that was as good as it gets.
Best Documentary Feature
Whoa, To Kill a Tiger?? Proved me wrong! And also right, because big surprise from the geniuses at the Academy—it didn’t win.
Best Cinematography
Should have been El Conde. Any movie about Conde Nast has to look good.
Best Live Action Short
Okay, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. That’s a solid win. Looks like even a broken Academy is right twice a day!!!
Best Sound
The Zone of Interest, probably shouldn’t have got this one; because there’s no sound in space, but we’re not going by science here. We’re going by coolest sounding title!
Best Original Score
Should have been Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Nothing sounds cooler than nostalgia, am I right folks.
Best Original Song
“It Never Went Away” from American Symphony sounds like a bop, let’s face it. Should’ve won.
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, no matter how much of an afterthought your title sounded like!
